Who

Biologist, programmer, photographer, avid book reader, anglophile statistician; combine these, stir, fill mould, let dry for some decades years, and prod the result to see if you can get any reaction. While you're busy doing this, I'll try to find some more silly pictures in my collection to add to this page. (Other than that, I'm harmless... well, mostly harmless. Promised.)

Where

I live in Berne, Switzerland, and have lived/studied/worked in (and around) this city for the majority of the last 30 years. Given that almost everything here happens on a very small scale, I can happily travel from home to work in a few minutes by public transport or on my bicycle, hence I haven't got a car; I simply don't need one. Instead, I have a yearly ticket covering all trains here in the country (known as a "Generalabonnement", or simply GA for short; "Abonnement général" in French, or AG); very handy. The small scale also makes it easy to cover most of Berne on foot, so I often take a camera along when taking a little walk (or during lunch break, or shopping trips etc) and take pictures of whatever I happen to encounter. Every now and then I get out one of the heavier cameras and really go hunting for suitable subjects (where "suitable" is a very broad term, of course).

All the pictures on this page where taken in Berne (apart from the b&w image above, which was taken in Muri, i.e. just outside of Berne itself); if you happen to know Berne, try to identify the precise location. Oh, and I grew up in a small village in the Kanton of St. Gallen, i.e. in the North-Eastern part of Switzerland; I moved to Berne when I started university.

What

This site basically was born a few years ago when I had to find an internet provider for my computer at home. Along with the dial-in connection they provided, they also allowed you to set up a web page (although just within a single flat folder), so I put together some of the utilities and scripts I had written for the Macintosh computer over the years. Since then, the site has moved several times, and with more space available to me, I also started to put some pictures from my collection on-line (I've been into photography ever since I was 8 years old, starting out with one of those big Polaroid instant cameras).

When

I build and maintain this site in my free time, so updates don't happen very regularly. On the other hand, the number of pictures in my collection is growing by an alarmingly high rate but of course, only very few of them might actually be interesting for the general public. Sometimes, of course, some silly ones still slip through, like this one, for example (and yes, that's a red umbrella in the foreground):

Why

Just for the fun of it. Well, and I keep improving my html and php skills while setting up and maintaining the site. And some people might actually find the scripts found on these pages useful. And if not... well yes, it's just for fun.
